Description:

This rifle was produced by the Burnside Rifle Company as a carbine and then converted by Springfield Arsenal circa 1871 into a rifle. It is fitted with the distinctive three-groove rifled barrel and forearm with double bands. Only 1,108 arms are believed to have undergone this conversion. It has bayonet lug, blade front and folding ladder rear sights with a matching serial number on the left side of the barrel near the breech and on the top of the frame at the rear. The casehardened frame is marked "MODEL/1865" and "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT'D MARCH 6. 1860/MANUF D AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE Co." on top. It is fitted with a Stabler magazine cutoff. The sling bar and ring remain installed. It is fitted with a smooth, straight grip stock and forearm with two barrel bands, sling swivels, cleaning rod and a smooth buttplate. The magazine tube is fed through the butt.

Rating Definition:

Good as arsenal refurbished/converted and subsequently refurbished. The barrel has an artificial gray to light brown patina with faint marks and light pitting. The other components have a mix of dark case coloring and brown patina with some spots of light pitting. The refinished wood is very good and has a faintly visible inspector cartouche behind the saddle ring bar mount. There are some minor dings, a few small chips/scrapes and some small repairs. Mechanically fine with all markings aside from the cartouche clear.
