Civil War Era Massachusetts Arms Co. Maynard Saddle Ring Carbine

This is a Second Model Maynard carbine manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company between 1860 and 1865. This model was used by cavalry units during the Civil War including the 9th and 11th Indiana and 11th Tennessee cavalry units. The left side of the receiver is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27. 1851./DEC. 6. 1859." The right side is marked "MANUFACTURED BY/ MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS." The serial number is marked on the lower tang. Regulation cavalry sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver. It has a pinched blade front sight and rear sight with two folding leaves graduated up to 500 yards. It is fitted with a smooth straight grip stock with crisp boxed "AJN" and "JM" cartouches and a slightly curved smooth buttplate.

ConditionFine. The barrel retains 50% of the original blue finish with spotted brown patina and oxidation on the balance. The frame has a dark brown patina with patterns of the original case colors and some light scratches. The stock is very fine with a series of light scratches and pressure marks. Mechanically excellent with crisp markings.
