Cased and Inscribed Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolver

Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolver with case and accessories manufactured circa 1858. The left side of the top strap is inscribed in Spanish: "La 22de Julio de 1860." This Model 2 revolver has a octagon barrel, round loading lever with octagon base, round, five-shot cylinder roll-engraved with the Cabin and Indian scene and 5/8-inch recoil shield cut-out. The left side of the one-piece grip is scrimshawed with the Mexican Eagle and Serpent motif. The revolver has the high polish Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder. The loading lever, hammer, cylinder pin and trigger are casehardened. The barrel has a brass cone front sight and the hammer spur has bordered knurling. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style legend with pointing hand. The serial number, "19409" is stamped on the underside of the barrel, the side of the cylinder and the butt. All of the visible serial numbers match. The mahogany case has five compartments and is lined with blue velvet. The case contains: (1) 100 count, japanned tin of Eley percussion caps with embossed lid (Rapley, p. 404, Fig.2), (2) American Flask and Cap pocket pistol size powder flask with fixed charger embossed on both sides with the Eagle and Shield motif (Rapley, p.309, Fig. 8), (3) brass, bow-leg .28 caliber double cavity bullet mold with "COLTS/PATENT" on the sprue cutter and "F" stamped on the right block (Rapley, #M24).

ConditionVery fine as partially refinished (rear grip strap). The balance of revolver retains at least 90% of the original high polish blue and casehardened finish. There are traces of pitting and a small amount of finish loss on the bottom of the frame near the loading lever. The balance of the frame has some light finish wear on contact points. The cylinder retains all of the Cabin and Indian scene and has about 80% of the blue finish. The percussion nipples and adjacent portions of the cylinder have some light flash pitting. The hammer, cylinder pin, trigger and loading lever retain about 95% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The grip is in excellent condition with strong scrimshaw decoration; wear is limited to several hair-line age cracks on the right side and butt. The barrel markings are crisp. The hammer will not hold at full cock. The case is in excellent condition with minimal exterior wear. The interior lining is un-faded and free from tears and stains. Wear is limited to several minor compression marks from contact with the revolver cylinder and barrel. The percussion cap tin is in very good condition, The powder flask is in very good overall condition and retains about 75% of the brown lacquer finish on the body and gold plating on the top and charger. The bullet most has some pitting on the iron sprue cutter but the mold blocks are in excellent condition with minimal wear. This is a unique example of an inscribed Colt Model 2, 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolver with case and accessories.
