This is an example of one of 401 Lighting rifles purchased by the San Francisco Police Department in 1898. The San Francisco Police Department was the only known department to adopt this model as it was not considered as reliable as the lever action rifles of the day. These rifles were serial numbered in their own special range, SFP1 to SFP401 and are so marked on the lower tang. This example, "S.F.P.12", has the address/patent dates marked on the top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight and "44 Cal." at the breech. The Rampant Colt is on the left side of the receiver. It has German silver front and adjustable sporting style rear sights. It has primarily a blue finish with niter blued loading gate and trigger, and is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with light border carving and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate.
