U.S. Winchester-Lee Navy Straight Pull Bolt Action Rifle

Only approximately 15,000 of these Winchester-Lee rifles were manufactured under contract for the U.S. Navy. This rifle was part of the second contract of 5,000 rifles in 1898. They were serial numbered from 15001 to 20000 and were inspected by Lt. John N. Jordan. The rifles saw heavy use by the Navy and Marine Corp during the Spanish American War in Cuba and Puerto Rico and also in the Boxer Rebellion, Filipino Insurrection, and Moro Rebellion. The chamber is marked "-U.S.N.- /[anchor]/No15902/-J.N.J.--", and the left side of the receiver is marked with the two-line address/patent dates marking. It is equipped with a blade front sight and a ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. The rear barrel band is marked "U". Sling swivel studs are mounted to the rear barrel band and butt. It is mounted with a hand guard and smooth, full length, pistol grip stock with a buttplate that has a compartment.

ConditionVery good plus. 40% of the thinned original blue finish remains primarily on the receiver and protected areas. The balance has thinned to mottled brown patina as is typical of these rifles and has a slight yellow coloration (possibly a preservative). The refinished stock is in better condition than is often seen with an attractive grain under a protective coat of varnish, scattered indentations, small scratches, and scattered small black marks. Mechanically excellent. This rifle would be an excellent addition to a Navy, Marine Corp, or Winchester collection and is surely missing from many!
