Description:

This is a rare example of a presentation grade, factory engraved Walther Model PP pistol that has an inset disc in the left grip that is engraved with the initials "AP" for Ante Pavelic, the Nazi leader of Croatia. The right grip is also carved with the Croatian Crest of Arms. He was a Croatian fascist leader and politician who led the "Ustashe" movement that ultimately ruled the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) during World War II. Croatia was at this time a puppet state of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany in occupied Yugoslavia. He supported the genocidal policies against ethnic and racial minorities during the war and led the brutal regime that was responsible for the mass murder of several hundred thousand Serbs and tens of thousands of Jews and Romanians living in Croatia during the war. Pavelic was a lawyer and politician of the Croatian Party of Rights in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia known for his nationalist beliefs. At the end of the war in 1945, Pavelic fled to Austria and was able to escape the Bleiburg repatriations and war trials held at Nurnberg. He eventually made his way to Argentina where he remained politically active. In 1957, he was wounded in an assassination attempt, after which he went to Spain where he died from his wounds in 1959. This beautiful Walther pistol exhibits some of the best non-traditional engraving we have seen. It features a very unique almost English scroll type engraving with heavy geometric borders and designs with several large floral rosettes on the sides of the slide. The various markings have all been outlined in the geometric border. The engraving covers 98% of the overall exposed metal finish with almost no areas not covered by some type of embellishment. The layout and attention to detail is just exceptional and certainly factory done. The pistol itself is a late pattern with the 60 degree safety, ring hammer, loaded chamber indicator and no lanyard loop. The slide has the standard Walther Banner followed by "Waffenfabrik Walther, Zella-Mehlis (Thur)/Walther's Patent Cal 7.65mm" followed by "MOD.PP", which have all been framed or outlined in an engraved geometric pattern with engraving going right up to the edge of the borders. The right side of the frame, slide and front edge of the barrel has the Nazi "Eagle/N" commercial proof mark. The serial number is marked vertically on the right side of the frame (109815P). The entire pistol has been gold plated (which has been subsequently worn or lightly cleaned off) and it is fitted with a set of smooth original grips. As noted the left grip has a 1"x 1/2" oval disc inset in to the grip that has also been engraved with the script intertwined initials, "AP" in the center, with the right grip carved with a large "U" (for Ustale) over the crest or standard of Ante Pavelic as used during WWII.

Rating Definition:

Very good with traces of the original gold plate finish still remaining mostly in the protected areas on the inside of the pistol. The outside shows an attractive smooth silvery bright metal exterior. The markings and engraving are all clear. The grips are in very fine condition with a small chip present on upper right panel with a very nice old aged look with only minor scratches or handling marks on the surface. The metal inset presentation disc is intact with relief engraving and the raised relief carving in the right side is also clear and deep. This is an exceptionally rare and historically significant Walther Nazi presentation model PP pistol. It would certainly be the center piece of any advanced Walther semi-automatic pistol or World War II historical collection.
