Description:

The included letter from Smith & Wesson historian Roy G. Jinks indicates that this revolver is "a .38/44 Outdoorsman (adjustable sight) model." The letter also explains the evolution of the Smith & Wesson .38/44 Heavy Duty as it went through multiple changes. The Outdoorsman is one of these altered models and is fitted with adjustable sights. The factory records discussed in the letter indicate that this example shipped on May 22, 1947, to Sunham, Carrigan, Hayden & Co. in San Francisco, California with its current configuration. It is a transitional model with a pre-war appearance and post-war enhancements. The model changed again in 1950. Features include serrated grip straps, checkered Magna grips with silver medallions, "MADE IN U.S.A." on the right front of the frame, S&W trademark on the right side plate, "SMITH & WESSON" on the left side of the barrel, and the caliber designation on the right side.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. There is some light wear at the high edges and a faint cylinder drag line but the revolver retains 97% of the original blue finish with some minor handling/storage type marks. The grips are very good with some small dings/dents primarily confined to the butt. The action is excellent, and the markings are clear.
