Description:

Produced in the introductory year for the Commander before the adoption of the "LW" prefix to distinguish it from the Combat Commander, this pistol was sold via the J. M Dinken Company of New York City to a Captain H.W. Richards of the 441st CIC Detachment and was shipped by way of the Postmaster of APO 500 in San Francisco on January 4, 1950. Established during World War One as the Corps of Intelligence Police, the Counter-Intelligence Corps was a major component of the American intelligence effort during World War Two, vetting personnel for classified positions, operating on the battlefield harvesting abandoned enemy intelligence and preventing "stay behind" type sabotage, and serving as the couriers for nuclear weapon material leaving Los Alamos for the Pacific. Formed in Brisbane, Australia, during World War Two, agents of the 441st were granted broad authority, traveling in plain clothes or without rank markings and reporting directly to MacArthur's intelligence staff chief in order to search for Japanese soldiers trying to pass as civilians, investigating sabotage and vetting native leaders and police for reliability. Following the Japanese Surrender, the 441st was part of MacArthur's occupation forces, and in July of 1950 entered combat operations in Korea, which would include participation in the Incheon Landing and the "Little Switch" and "Big Switch" prisoner exchanges in 1953. The pistol is equipped with fixed sights and has with the Rampant Colt and Super 38 nomenclature on the left side of the slide, one line address on the right, and the very early "0023" serial number on the right side of the alloy frame. Grips are checkered plastic with Rampant Colt imprints. Included with the pistol is a packet of consignor research on the 441st, a copy of a Colt factory letter, and a box for a Colt Mark IV Series '70 pistol.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 97% plus of the original blued steel and 99% original black anodized aluminum finish showing some bright edge wear overall, a ding on the rear sight and next to the front sight, a few spots of bright gray on the right side of the slide and mild handling marks overall. The grips are excellent with mild dings on the sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Even without the Counter-Intelligence service association, this pistol is noteworthy for it's exceptional condition; Commanders were often quite literally shot to destruction by their owners, especially these very early pistols, a problem that the hard-shooting 38 Super cartridge and the duties of an occupation-era intelligence officer would likely exacerbate.
