Description:

This attractive rifle is marked "IGNAZ KOWAR, AMBERG" on the top of the frame. "D.R.G.M." for "German Empire Registered Design" is marked on the left side of the breechblock. Ignatz Kowar was the royal gunsmith for the Bavarian court. He was also a founding member and Federal Schützenmeister of the Upper Palatinate Rifle Association. The right side of the frame and breechblock have "crown/B" and "crown/U" proofmarks. The fluted octagon barrel has a checkered top flat and is fitted with a removable post front sight with guards and a sling swivel. There is no rear sight or dovetail on the barrel, but an integral sight mount on the upper tang is fitted with an adjustable peep sight. It also has double set triggers. The frame and lever are finely engraved a wooded scene of an archer kneeling before a stag with a glowing cross between its antlers. This scene is the vision of St. Hubert who is considered the patron saints of hunters and is likely patterned after a very similar scene of the vision painted by Wilhelm Carl Räuber (1892). The right side of the rifle has a scene of two goats in motion. The extended trigger guard/lever has a vulture, and a dove is featured behind the breechblock. These scenes are complimented by Germanic floral/scroll engraving patterns. The forearm and stock have fine relief engraving with some checkering on the right side of the butt and left side of the wrist along with a thumb rest on the right and a large cheek rest on the left. A sling swivel is also mounted beneath the butt. "53" is marked on the inside of the falling block on the lower left. "15416" is marked on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm along with multiple proofmarks.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 60% of the blue finish with some thinning and spotting. The remaining components have a brown patina with visible case colors. The engraving and markings are clear and crisp. The wood is very fine with some wear and a small repair on the forearm tip, smooth edges, sharp engraving, crisp checkering, various light scratches, and there is some residue on the lower area of the checkering on the right side of the butt. A small piece is absent on the thumb rest. Mechanically excellent.
