Description:

This rifle has a Martini patent style receiver marked "J.U.BÄNZIGER/ST. GALLEN." on the right side. The front of the frame (obscured by the forearm) is marked "411551". The bottom of the fluted octagon barrel is marked "2", "551" followed by a Swiss proof, "W", "I" and "11". Swiss proofs are also present on the top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. It has a blade front sight and a notch rear sight adjustable for elevation and windage. It is fitted with walnut forearm and straight grip buttstock with a Swiss style buttplate. The right side of the butt has a plaque marked "J. Tobler." which may indicate that this rifle was once owned by confectioner Johan Tobler whose son Theodore turned the family business into the famous Toblerone Chocolate Company. The left side of the butt is also hand marked "Tobler" in script just below the buttplate tang. Additional features include double set triggers, sling swivels mounted to the bottom of the barrel and the butt, and a Swiss style trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The rifle has 70% blue with the balance a brown patina on the barrel and a silver-gray patina on the receiver and buttplate. There is some spotting on the buttplate and a darker patina in groove on the top of the falling block and the trigger guard plate. The inscription plate has a golden patina. The wood is also very good with some small dings and minor scratches throughout. Mechanically fine with functional set triggers.
