Description:

This single shot, breech loading rifle has a Martini patent style receiver with fancy scroll engraving. The barrel is marked "Wilkinson & Son. 27. PALL MALL. LONDON." below English proofs behind the rear sight. It features a blade front and rear sights with a folding leaf marked "200" and a folding ladder graduated "300" through "800". It is fitted with a checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with contrasting forend cap and flat, steel buttplate. The matching serial number is marked on the inside of the forearm, on the underside of the barrel, and on the lever. The front of the frame and the forearm lug are both marked "2". "8507" is marked on the bottom of the stock ahead of a sling stud. The right side of the stock has a plaque marked "PRESENTED BY/Lord Northwick/TO/T.J.C. TOMLIN", and the left side has a coordinating plaque marked a heraldic crest of two arrows and a wreath over a shield with an English style lion and a banner reading "STET FORTVNA DOMVS" ("Let the fortune of the house stand"). This crest and motto are those of the Harrow School in northwest London which instructed eight British Prime Ministers, including Winston Churchill, and other important statesmen. Thomas James Chesshyre Tomlin is recorded in THE HARROW SCHOOL REGISTER, 1801-1893 with "Shooting VIII., 1884-5" listed among his achievements and was a British judge earning the position Lords of Appeal in Ordinary, sat on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, and earned the title of a life peer baron.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The rifle has a mottled gray-brown patina with traces of the blue finish retained in the protected area beneath the forearm. The inscription plates have a dark patina but all markings and engraving are legible. The buttplate has oxidation. The wood has been sanded and the checkering mostly absent on the forearm with the remainder smoothed. There are some scrapes, dings and scratches throughout as well as some chipping at the front of the comb. Mechanically fine.
