This is a solid representative example of a very rare and very early Mannlicher pistol-carbine. The Austrian designer Ferdinand Ritter Von Mannlicher was one of the world's best weapon designers in the late 1800s and this model, along with several others, ushered in many new and unique semi-automatic weapons from the Mannlicher company. This series of pistol-carbine was based on the earlier pistol designs. This carbine is very unique in that it uses an internal/concealed hammer that is initially cocked by depressing a small lever on the right side of the frame. After that, the cycling action of each round fired in turn cocks the weapon. This model fires the 7.63mm Mannlicher pistol cartridge which can be loaded through the top of the action using a Mannlicher stripper clip, or via a small detachable box magazine located on the underside of the action. This carbine uses a blow-back designed action and with each shot fired, the barrel/upper receiver and bolt start their initial rearward movement, then disengages the bolt from the barrel, extracts the spent cartridge and in turn strips a new round from the box magazine when going forward. The only serial numbers (10) located on the carbine are on the back side of the box magazine, rear of the front sight and left side of the trigger with no other visible numbers. The receiver and action are undated or numbered and there is a single "Crown/N" proof mark on the left side of the upper receiver and top of the bolt. This model has an early military style tangent rear sight graduated for 80, 200 and 300 meters, with a fixed inverted "V" type front sight. It has a very unique, full length, one-piece wooden barrel cover that acts as a forend, with a small steel collar on the front end that acts as both a collar for the cover and the front sight base. It has a full length rifle stock attached to the rear of the action, that has a small early European style oval cheekpiece, and a checkered pistol grip area. The stock has a smooth hard-rubber grip cap and a molded hard-rubber buttplate that has a checkered face with a circled "MW" logo in the center of the buttplate.
