Description:

The document is dated October 1795. The document appoints [John Gennen?] as "Sub-Commissioner of Excise within the Fort and District of Newport, and District of Foxford". The document is approximately 14 by 11 inches and comes in a frame. This document was written during the reign of King George III of the United Kingdom. George is the third longest reigning English king and third longest reigning English monarch, only Victoria and Elizabeth II lived and reigned longer. His reign covered some of the most important and tumultuous periods in English and world history including the political, agricultural, and industrial revolutions. He gave up power later in his life as he slowly went insane and thus earned the moniker of "Mad King George." He is best remembered by Americans as the tyrant king against whom the American rebels fought and defeated in the American Revolution.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The document is in very good condition for its age with some small tears in the mid section along an old crease line. Some of the handwriting is faded and difficult to read. The frame is fine with faded golden paint and some minor storage wear.
