Relief Panel Scene Engraved and Gold Inlaid B. Beermann Damascus Barrelled Hammer Cape Gun

This 19th century cape gun has fine Germanic engraving patterns including detailed game scenes on the lock plates and frame. The bottom of the trigger guard has a coat of arms accented by gold inlaid borders. The barrels have gold bands at the breech, and the rib is marked "B. BEERMANN IN MUNSTER". The lock plates are marked "B. BEERMANN" on the right and "IN MUNSTER" on the left. THE ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE OF THE INDUSTRIAL DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION 1862 lists Beermann as a gunsmith who won the 1855 Paris Exhibition bronze medal and received an honorable mention during the 1862 London Exhibition for guns including a "A double barrelled gun, one barrel rifled." A man in 18th century attire is chiseled in relief with his arm around a deer on the upper tang between the hammers and further back is a folding, adjustable peep sight. It is fitted with a fancy carved horn pistol grip and horn under lever, German silver blade front and large notch rear sights, steel buttplate with matching engraving, and a checkered walnut straight grip stock and forearm with a small cheek piece on the left side and a sling swivel on the bottom of the buttstock. The right barrel is fully rifled and has a single set trigger and approximately 1 3/4 inch chamber. The smoothbore left barrel has a 2 1/2 inch chamber and open choke. Both barrels are marked "20" on the bottom. The length of pull is 14 1/4 inches.

ConditionVery good. Most of the gold inlay remains with some small flakes absent from the letters. Strong Damascus patterns and traces of case colors remain visible on the otherwise silvered out surfaces with some light pitting and spotting. The heavily worn stock has extensive dings and light scratches along with several chips absent from the forearm and partially smoothed checkering. The front sling swivel is broken/absent. The action is very good, and the markings and engraving remain mostly crisp.
