The included document states that William B. Keeler was elevated to the rank of Major in the 35th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on June 5, 1863, and was sworn on August 8th of that year. Keeler began his Union service as a captain in Company A of the 35th and records indicate he was 33 when he enlisted on September 18, 1862. The dates in the historical record corroborate the June 5th, 1863, promotion date and that he was further promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on August 8th, 1863. His regiment saw action in multiple battles include those at Vicksburg, Nashville and Pleasant Hill as well as during the Red River Campaign. Lt. Col. Keeler was given substantial credit for the capture of Henderson Hill while only losing one man just prior to their participation in the Battle of Pleasant Hill in 1864 where the regiment was again victorious but suffered significant losses. Keeler left service as a Brevet Colonel of Volunteers on August 10, 1865 at Davenport, Iowa.
