Description:

The included document states that William B. Keeler was elevated to the rank of Major in the 35th Iowa Volunteer Infantry on June 5, 1863, and was sworn on August 8th of that year. Keeler began his Union service as a captain in Company A of the 35th and records indicate he was 33 when he enlisted on September 18, 1862. The dates in the historical record corroborate the June 5th, 1863, promotion date and that he was further promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on August 8th, 1863. His regiment saw action in multiple battles include those at Vicksburg, Nashville and Pleasant Hill as well as during the Red River Campaign. Lt. Col. Keeler was given substantial credit for the capture of Henderson Hill while only losing one man just prior to their participation in the Battle of Pleasant Hill in 1864 where the regiment was again victorious but suffered significant losses. Keeler left service as a Brevet Colonel of Volunteers on August 10, 1865 at Davenport, Iowa. The Colt Model 1851 revolver was manufactured in 1861 and is marked with the one-line "New York U.S. America" address on the top barrel flat, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame, the naval battle scene on the cylinder and matching serial numbers. It is equipped with a cone front sight, hammer notch rear sight and one-piece varnished walnut grip. The Model 1851 Navy was a popular officer and cavalry sidearm during the Civil War and was carried by influential military leaders on both sides of the war including Robert E. Lee.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Aside from some traces the original blue finish and case colors on the revolver has faded to a mixture of bright metal and gray-brown patina with some patches of pitting and various marks and scratches. The traces of remaining silver plating have taken on a dark patina. The grip is very good with much of the original varnish, some pressure marks and light abrasions along with some lower edge wear. Mechanically needs some attention. The markings remain mostly clear. The document is well worn, ripped, and has some tears but is in good condition given its age. Overall an intriguing pair steeped in Civil War history.
