Manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, from 1863 to 1865. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the four-line Maynard patent dates marking and the right side has the three-line Massachusetts Arms address. The lower tang is stamped with the serial number and "1865". The letter "N" is stamped on the left side of the rear sight base and the letter "S" is stamped on the left rear barrel flat, on the saddle ring bar and on the buttplate tang. Pinched blade front sight, three leaf rear sight graduated to 500 yards and saddle ring bar with ring on the left side of the receiver. Blue barrel, casehardened remaining parts and mounted with a smooth oiled walnut stock with a sharp boxed "JM" and "GWS" cartouche on the left side of the wrist. The Second Model differed from the First Model in that it lacked the tape primer and a patch box and it had a somewhat square profile to the buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 95% original blue finish with some scattered small areas of minor spotting. The receiver retains 40% plus original case colors with a smooth mottled gray patina on the balance. The lever retains 50% original case colors, mainly in protected areas with a smooth dark gray patina on the balance. The buttplate has a smooth dark patina. The stock is also very fine with a few light pressure dents and a few minor dings. The cartouches are sharp and clear. The receiver markings are clear. Mechanically excellent.
