Description:

Produced by the Burnside Rifle Company as subcontractors, 34,000 carbines were made c. 1865. Fitted with the distinctive 3-groove rifled barrel and forearm with single barrel band. Lug blade front and folding ladder rear sights. The casehardened frame is marked with the model and four-line address on the top near the breech and the serial number at the rear. It is not fitted with the Stabler magazine cutoff. The left side barrel flat is marked "J.L.C.". Most components have single letter sub-inspection marks. It is fitted with a saddle ring and bar, straight grip walnut stock and forearm with a single sling swivel on the bottom of the butt and a smooth buttplate with a removable tube magazine.

Rating Definition:

Fine as partially refinished (wood). The barrel retains 60% of the original blue finish. The muted case colors have mostly faded but remain visible on several of the external areas, and nearly all of the brilliant case colors remain on the interior. There is some light spotting and various scattered marks throughout. The wood has been revarnished with some of the varnished smeared on the metal surfaces. Mechanically fine with legible visible markings.
