Civil War Era Massachusetts Arms Co. Maynard Saddle Ring Carbine

This Maynard carbine was manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company between 1860 and 1865. It has the second model style stock and markings but earlier style sights and is .35 caliber. Second Model Maynard carbines were used by Union Cavalry units during the Civil War including the 9th and 11th Indiana and 11th Tennessee. The left side of the receiver is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27. 1851./DEC. 6. 1859.", and the right side is marked "MANUFACTURED BY/ MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS." The serial number is marked on the lower tang. A standard cavalry sling bar and ring are fixed to the left side of the receiver. It has a German silver blade front and notch rear sights, is fitted with a smooth straight grip stock with a slightly curved smooth buttplate.

ConditionGood. The carbine retains traces of the faded original blue finish near the hinge with primarily an even dark brown patina. The revarnished stock is very good with only a few minor abrasions and dings. Mechanically excellent. The markings are crisp.
