American Machine Works Smith's Patent Percussion Breech Loading Civil War Carbine

A total of 30,362 Smith carbines were purchased by the United States during the Civil War. Smith carbines utilized gas sealing rubber cartridges and were considered to be accurate and reliable weapons by many of the cavalrymen they were issued to. This example has the standard three sets of markings on the left side of the frame, and the left barrel flat near the receiver is marked with "L.F.R". The matching serial number is on the receiver and barrel. It features a blade front sight and folding leaf rear sight correctly absent of range markings. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip walnut stock with a steel carbine buttplate. There is a sharp "LFR" cartouche on the left wrist and some single and double letter stamps.

ConditionFair. The carbine displays a mixed patina with overall light pitting and some traces of the original finishes. The stock is good as partially refinished with some small handling/storage marks, a larger chip absent from the right side of the wrist, and some smaller pieces absent from the rev forearm. Mechanically excellent with mostly crisp markings.
