Cased Early First Model Massachusetts Arms Co. Maynard Percussion Rifle with Accessories

Edward Maynard received his first of 23 firearms patents in 1845 after ten years as a dentist. He also patented a variety of other devices for dentistry and remained a dentist and became of the most prominent dentists in the United States while his firearms were contracted to the Massachusetts Arms Co. He provided dental work for many of the country's elite in Baltimore and Washington and supposedly was invited to be the Imperial Dentist for Tsar Nicholas I. His technical skills helped create the Maynard carbines widely used in the Civil War along with a line of sporting rifles. Given their limited supplies, the Confederate forces appreciated that the Maynard cases could be reloaded upwards of 100 times. This early serial number percussion rifle was produced in the late 1850s. This example is especially rare in that it is complete with a fitted hardwood case with a container with nine rolls of Maynard primer tape, six original Maynard cartridges, four additional brass cases, a container of "MAYNARD/LUBRICATOR", powder flask, bullet mold and other cleaning and reloading tools. The rifle has a brass blade front sight, an adjustable tang mounted peep sight, and a straight wrist walnut stock with attractive figuring, a patch box and carbine style buttplate. The right side of the action has the correct First Model marking of "MAYNARD ARMS CO/WASHINGTON", and the left side has the correct two-line Massachusetts Arms Co. address. The patch box also has the correct First Model marking of "MAYNARD PATENTEE/SEP 22. 1845/MAY 20. 1851/JUNE 17. 1856" on the door, a spare nipple inside and unclear stamps on the wood bottom. The serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel. The barrel is blued while the small parts such as the hammer and barrel latch are niter blued, and the remaining components are casehardened.

ConditionVery good. The barrel retains 25% of the thinning original blue finish with a gray patina on the balance. The action, patch box and buttplate have a mottled gray patina, and several of the small parts retain 75% plus of the niter blue finish. The wood is fine with a chip on the right side at the lower tang, some slight abrasions and a couple of small dings. The action is fine. The markings are partially faded but legible throughout. The case is fine with cracks in the lid, some minor storage wear overall and some light stains and compression marks on the interior. The accessories are fine to very good.
