Description:

This is an exceptional example of a Remington New Model Army percussion revolver with a high polish blue finish on the barrel, loading lever, cylinder and frame; casehardened hammer, and brass trigger guard. The two-piece grips are oil finished walnut. The top barrel is stamped "PATENTED. SEPT. 14. 1858/REMINGTON & SONS. ILION, NEW YORK. U.S.A./NEW-MODEL." Single letter sub-inspection marks are stamped on most of the components including the grips but an inspector's cartouche is not found on the side of the grips which are hand numbered "14" on the undersides. The bottom of the grips carry the single letter "A" inspector mark. The full serial number is stamped on the underside of the barrel and left side of the frame under the grip. The Remington New Model Army revolver was the primary handgun purchased by the Ordnance Department during the second half of the Civil War with 115,557 received between mid-1863 and the end of the conflict. These revolvers remained the primary cavalry handgun until the Colt Single Action Army revolver was issued circa 1873.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The revolver retains 97% of the bright original blue finish with some rotation marks and flaking on the cylinder, a few slight scratches, and overall light handling marks. The replacement grips are very fine with some slight edge wear. The action is fine, and the markings are crisp throughout. This is an exceptional example of an important Civil War revolver.
