Description:

Colt Single Action Army revolver manufactured in 1940. The revolver has the Colt pre-war commercial blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame and loading gate are color casehardened. The trigger and top of the hammer are blued and the sides of the hammer are polished bright. The two-piece, black, checkered, hard rubber grips have the Rampant Colt trademark embossed in an oval at the top. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "32 W.C.F." which indicates that it was manufactured prior to October 1, 1929 when the factory introduced the pre-fix "COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY" before the caliber designation. However, Colt continued to use barrels made prior to the change in markings on a few late production revolvers like this example made before Single Action Army production ceased in 1941 at serial number 357859. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line Hartford legend. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt two-line/three-date patent markings followed by the Rampant Colt trademark. The left front of the trigger guard bow is stamped with a "4" assembler's mark above the Colt "Triangle/VP" proof mark. The face of the cylinder is stamped with a five-pointed star that denotes the use of special grade steel. The assembly number "429" is stamped on the inside of the loading gate. The full serial number, "356725" is stamped on the bottom of the frame and the right side of the back strap and trigger guard underneath the grip. "356725" is lightly scratched on the inside of both grips. The partial serial number "255" is stamped between the chambers on rear face of the cylinder (the second "5" is a double stamp). All of the visible serial numbers match. The frame lacks the cut-out in the top strap. The hammer has borderless knurling on the spur. The revolver is complete with a royal blue cardboard carton. The blue and white label on the end of the carton reads: "4 3/4 Colt's Army S.A. Revolver. .32-20/Rubber Blue". Colt advertising labels are stamped on the inside of the lid and the bottom of the carton. The revolver serial number "356125" is written in pencil on one end of the carton bottom.

Rating Definition:

Near new. The revolver retains 99% plus of the original commercial blue and vivid color casehardened finish. The bore is mirror bright. All of the markings are perfect. The ejector housing, frame, trigger guard and back strap screws show no wear. The oversize replacement black, hard rubber grips are in perfect condition. The carton is in very good condition with an excellent end label. The edges of the carton lid and bottom have some flaking and cracking and one corner of the lid is broken. The carton interior has some flaking and grease stains. This is an outstanding example of a pre-war .32-20 Colt Single Action Army revolver with original factory carton from the very end of the Single Action production run.
