Description:

This is an exceptionally rare, all original, example of a very unique Mauser Model 1896 20 shot, flat side, cone hammer Broomhandle pistol. These pistols were produced on a very limited basis with an estimated 90-100 total ever being produced with most being shipped to South America. This is one of the very last produced as it is numbered "91" and as noted it is complete with its original and matching, extra large 20 Shot combination wooden shoulder stock/holster. As noted this specific pistol is very unique in that it has flat sides without the milled frame panels, which was later adopted on all models as a means to save weight. The top of the barrel extension is marked "WAFFENFABRIK/ MAUSER/OBERNDORF a/N", and the right side has a small "Crown over U" acceptance proof. The right side of the barrel extension has a small antlered proof indicative of the Early Oberndorf proofmark and the bottom of the barrel in front of the lower receiver has several small script letter proofs. This pistol has all the early features such as the long extractor on top of the breech bolt, the cone hammer, the first style safety lever that you pull "down" to engage, the early style tangent rear that is held in by a pin driven in from the side with the large numbers that is graduated 100-1000 meters, the first style firing pin that is retained by the dovetailed block and of course the original "20 shot" frame forging. It is fitted with the original grips that have 23 grooves on each grip with both correctly numbered "91" on the back. The original ring is on the bottom of the frame. The rear of the frame, the dovetail block and the grips are all correctly serial numbered "91". As noted, this is complete with its original and extremely rare walnut shoulder stock that is actually more rare than the pistols, as they were very fragile due to their large size which unfortunately caused most or all of them to get damaged and broken during use. This specific example is in excellent condition with an original stock attaching iron that is serial numbered "91" on top. The wooden stock is also numbered "91 on the inside of the lid by the locking latch and along the flat edge of the stock itself. It has the correct all blued Mauser finish on the major components and the heat blued finish on some of the smaller components with the correct factory in the bright polished bolt.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 70% plus original blue finish on the upper receiver/barrel which shows wear on the muzzle and front frame rails, while the flatside frame itself actually has 65% of a fading blue/brown patina on the sides and grips straps with more blue in the protected areas. The grips are in very good condition with nice matching color on both sides, which also show minor handling marks on the lower edges. The stock is in very fine condition overall showing minor light scratches and tiny little nicks on the sides in some areas all from actual use. The metal parts (attaching iron, and hinge assembly) all show 50% of their blue finish with even wear from actual use. This is a great, all original, early flat side, cone hammer "20 shot" Broomhandle that just shows light use. These are getting almost impossible to find in this original condition.
