Description:

This Springfield rifle is fitted with a barrel hand marked "No. 1950 GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK" on top and stamped "30/06" on the left at the breech. The factory letters indicates that rifle number 1950 was built in 1948 and was sold on September 21 of that year for $425. It was chambered for .30-06 cartridges in 1948; had a 24 inch barrel, a Lyman Alaskan scope, sling, and pad; and weighed 8 pounds 5 ounces without the scope and 9 pounds 2 ounces with it (current weight 7 pounds 10 ounce). One letter explains: "The original purchaser, 'H. Pulitzer', is almost certainly Herbert Pulitzer, born in New York on November 20, 1896. Herbert was the youngest son of the newspaper publisher, Joseph Pulitzer after whom the Pulitzer Prize is named. The younger Pulitzer served as a naval aviator and ambulance service volunteer in WWI. The front receiver ring is stippled, and an adjustable Lyman receiver sight is fitted to the right side of the bridge. It has a beaded blade front sight on a stippled ramp. It is fitted on a fleur-de-lis checkered pistol grip stock with horn forend cap, bright brass grip cap, sling swivel studs, unmarked initial oval, cheekpiece, and a serrated steel buttplate with compartment. The bolt is jeweled, and the handle is polished.

Rating Definition:

Very good as custom built and altered. The rifle retains 95% plus of the blue finish with some small areas of light spotting and minor handling type marks. The buttplate has some brown patina and spotting. The bolt retains most of the bright jeweled patterns with some light spotting particularly on the handle. The stock is very good with crisp checkering and some light scratches. The forend cap has some hairline age cracks. The action is fine. The markings are clear.
