Rare Experimental German August Menz Model III A Semi-Automatic Pistol

Consignor notes, this is one of three known Model III A pistols. August Menz was well known for his experimentation in pistol design, and this particular model is unlike any of his previous designs. The slide is marked "MENZ P&B PIST CAL 7.65/MOD III A" on the left side, over the serial number "10351" on the frame. The truly unique feature of this particular pistol is the take down lever, a standard Model III A is disassembled in a manner similar to the FN model 1910, but turning a knurled bushing at the muzzle. On this model, the bushing is integral to the slide, and does not turn. Disassembly is accomplished by the use of a spring loaded lever at the front right of the trigger guard. The lever is pulled and the slide brought back and up, separating it from the frame and fixed barrel. The barrel, frame and slide are all marked with a standard German "crown/N" nitro proof. With the safety latch at the left rear of the grip frame, closed top slide, push button magazine release, pin cocking indicator, loaded chamber indicator and fitted with brown checkered plastic "AM" monogrammed grips. A beautiful and rare example of the innovations and changes taking place in the early 20th century in the German pistol industry.

ConditionVery fine overall, with 70% original rust blue finish remaining displaying areas of edge wear, cycling marks, light pitting and surface scratches. The grips are excellent, with clear markings, sharp checkering, and some light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
