Historic Large Silver Plated Wine Cooler from the Hamburg-American Trans-Atlantic Ship SS Imperator, with Two Hamburg-American Passenger Lists

Measuring 18 inches tall and 13 inches wide, this wine cooler has been extensively decorated with a combination of engraving and hammered repousse work on most of the surface. Atop the lid is a three-dimensional rendering of an Imperial German eagle with an 8 1/2 inch wingspan, which doubles as a functional handle. The main cavity of the vessel measures 11 1/2 inches wide across the mouth and 9 3/4 inches deep with a removable metal riser in the center. The exterior of the body is fitted with a pair of scroll-decorated metal handles and each side prominently features a repoussed bust of the Poseidon, Greek God of the Oceans, surrounded by floral vines and flanked by a set of heraldic dolphins with leafy designs on the lower edges. The underside of the cooler is engraved with Hamburg-American's logo over "EIGENTUM VON SS IMPERATOR/HAPAG LINIE", marking it as the property of the SS Imperator, a vessel of the Hamburg-American Line (in German Hamburg Amerikanische Packetfahrt Actien Gesellschaft). Launched in 1912 and completed in 1913, the Imperator was the flagship of the Imperator Class cruise ship, and for a brief period the largest ocean liner on record, exceeding White Star's Titanic by two feet. While a successful vessel, the outbreak of World War I put her out of work, spending the war in Hamburg. After the Armistice, she was claimed by the Allies and given to the Americans, who rebranded her the U.S.S. Imperator and put her to work taking the men of the Expeditionary Force home. Working alongside her sister ship SS Leviathan, Imperator brought home 25,000 people over three cruises, at one point providing aid at sea to the President of Brazil. When the job was done, the ship was decommissioned from the U.S. Navy and handed over to the Cunard Line, which would rename the vessel RMS Berengaria, keep her in service through 1938, and finally scrap the vessel in 1946. Also included with the cooler are two dual-language (English and German) passenger lists for a voyage of the SS Graf Waldersee (another HAPAG vessel) scheduled to depart New York for Dover and Hamburg on 11 November 1905.

ConditionFine with some light handling marks and a mixed patina overall. The lid to mouth fit is still tight and all the handles are solid. The passenger lists are good with one showing mild cracking from having been rolled or folded. An attractive artifact from the golden age of the Trans-Atlantic cruise.
