Description:

Henry lever action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company circa April 1865. The rifle is engraved and has a gold-plated brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The engraving covers the sides and top of the receiver and butt plate heel and features floral and scroll patterns on a punch-dot background with scallop and line borders. The engraving on this rifle is very similar to the engraving on Henry rifle serial number 11,215 illustrated on page 50 of "The Winchester Book" by George Madis. Most of the engraving on Henry rifles was the work of Samuel J. Hoggson. This rifle has the late production features which include: (1) square back, nickel-silver front sight blade, (2) second style barrel legend, (3) large magazine follower and beveled receiver follower cut, (4) sling swivel on the left side of the butt and sling hook loop on the left side of the barrel and (5) buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The folding leaf rear sight has a 900 yard center notch and slide stop screw. The barrel is roll-stamped with the larger, second style, legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO.NEWHAVEN.CT." with all serif letters. The serial number, "9106" is stamped: (1) on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style, cap head, screws on the butt plate and receiver are correctly not serial numbered.

Rating Definition:

Good as refinished/regilted. The barrel/magazine has been cleaned and has an even artificial brown patina. The surfaces of the barrel/magazine are smooth with sharp edges and crisp original barrel address and serial number. The front sight blade has been filed to slightly alter the configuration. The rear sight is a modern replacement. The brass receiver and buttplate retain 70% of the period regilted finish. The engraving is sharp and shows minimal handling wear. The receiver is in very good condition with minimal handling wear and tight, un-blemished side-plate joints. The buttplate has expected wear on the heel and toe but otherwise retains nearly all of the regilted finish. The straight grain walnut stock has been stripped and re-oiled and is in good condition with a few scattered, minor, handling marks. This is a solid representative example of a scarce engraved Henry rifle.
