Description:

Manufactured by the Burgess Gun Company of Buffalo, New York c. 1892 to 1899. Designed by famous inventor Andrew Burgess, the shotgun features a steel sleeve that fits over the stock wrist and slides rearward to activate the bolt and breech mechanism. The Burgess Gun Company was purchased by Winchester in 1899, and its products were withdrawn from the market. Production of Burgess rifles and shotguns is estimated at only a few thousand. This shotgun has a Damascus barrel and blue receiver. The right side of the top of the receiver is engraved "BURGESS GUN CO," and "-> BUFFALO, N.Y. U.S.A.<-" on the left side. The underside of the receiver has the engraved serial number "2880" and is marked with the three-line patent dates. The lower tang is also marked "2880". Both barrels are Damascus. The matching barrel has been shortened to its current length of 17 inches with no sight, "2880" on the breech and 2 3/4 inch chamber. The attached barrel is 25 inches in length with a raised bead sight, 2 3/4 inch chamber and the choke gauges at cylinder. The serial number, "5084," is marked on the breech, and the right rear of the forearm is marked "NO 2880/AM. EXP./CO. 662". Each barrel has its own multi-point checkered walnut forearm. The steel cocking sleeve has a checkered walnut pistol grip, and the stock is a straight grip with a checkered horn buttplate with the Burgess Gun logo in the center. Length of pull is 14 1/8 inches.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrels retain a mostly visible Damascus pattern. The magazine tubes have a smooth brown and mottled brown patina. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown and gray patina. The forearm on the shorter barrel shows a number of small gouges, dents, and scratches, with much of the checkering worn smooth. The longer barrel forearm shows some minor dents and scratches. The checkering and American Express marking are crisp and clear. The screw that secures the sleeve to the cocking mechanism is absent and the sleeve moves freely on the stock wrist. The stock wrist is broken and repaired, and presently shows some cracking. Overall, the stock has scattered minor dents, dings, and scratches.
