Description:

This pistol has the buttplate style and longer overall length commonly seen on 18th century horse or cavalry pistols. This example has a darkly finished walnut stock with scroll style carved designs. The frizzen face is serrated. This feature remained popular in Spain and North Africa well after it was phased out elsewhere. The lock and other furniture have a variety of engraved designs. For example, the side plate has martial motifs while the buttcap has a floral design. The lock plate has a set of two-line markings done by hand that were likely applied by the maker. The bottom of the forend has a false ramrod as is sometimes seen on modern reproductions produced in the Middle East or on Victorian era display pieces. Some of the fittings are also somewhat crudely made suggesting this pistol was made for the tourist trade from a combination of modern and antique parts. A wire wrap serves as the barrel band.

Rating Definition:

Fair, near relic condition. The metal surfaces have a dark brown patina with significant oxidation and extensive pitting on the barrel. The stock is also fair with some cracks, scrapes, and repairs. Some of the pieces are broken, and the lock is inoperable.
