Description:

These pistols were likely manufactured in the early 19th century and are engraved with martial patterns on the sides of the actions along with some light floral accents. There are no visible maker's marks or proofmarks, but they were likely produced in France. The top of the actions have the sliding safety catch often employed on box lock pistols. The catch slides into a corresponding notch in the cock and a round hole in the frizzen. These safeties often failed, but in theory, they should both prevent the cock from striking and keep the frizzen closed preventing sparks from reaching the pan. The barrels screw off which allows for both easier and faster loading and a better fit for increased muzzle velocity. They both also have checkered walnut, bag shaped grips. Tap action pistols were very popular in at the tail end of the flintlock era and were produced in England, Belgium, and France along with a few other locales. They offered a second rapid follow up shot with a less complicated system, greater safety, and less bulk than other multi-shot flintlock handguns.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The brass displays primarily an aged patina with some verdigris in the recess between the barrels. The iron components have a gray patina and some oxidation. The top of the action is slightly separated, but the action is fine. The lower barrel has a small crack. The grip is poor with an old glue repair on the upper right, crude recheckering small chips and cracks, and mild wear to the balance of checkering.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The pistol has an aged patina on the brass and a mottled gray patina with some minor pitting and oxidation on the iron components. The grip is also fair with a chip at the junction with the rear of the action on the left and partially worn checkering. The top of the action is partially separated, but it remains mechanically fine. The barrels were not able to be removed.
