This is an interesting variation of a rare Ethan Allen First Model Pocket Rifle. Only a few thousand of these pistols are estimated to have been produced between 1830s through around 1842. Most had 5 1/2 to 9 inch barrels, but this example has a 10 inch part round, part octagon barrel. The top of the action has the "E. ALLEN /GRAFTON/MASS" marking lightly stamped and thus only partially legible along with "POCKET RIFLE" at a slight angle over "CAST STEEL/WARRANTED". The action also has the light engraving patterns commonly seen on the later production pistols. The batch number "49" is marked on the trigger and bottom of the action. It has a saw handle style walnut grip with German silver inlays. Along with the standard notch and blade sights, this example is fitted with front sight hood and a threaded "lollipop" peep sight.
