Desirable Slotter & Co. Marked Half Stock Percussion Rifle Made San Francisco, California, Retailer C. Curry

This back action percussion rifle is marked "SLOTTER & Co. PHILA" on the lock plate and top of the barrel. Just to the rear of the Slotter barrel marking is "MADE FOR (angling up) CHs CURRY (horizontal) SAN FRANCISCO (angling down)." The upper left flat at the breech is also marked "363 GAIN TWIST/WART." The barrel is fitted with a brass blade front sight and notch rear sight. The rifle has a straight wrist walnut half stock with checkered wrist, cheekpiece, and brass furniture. It includes a wooden ramrod with brass tips. Slotter & Co. plains rifles made for A.J. Plate of San Francisco are far more often seen. Charles Curry opened his shop in San Francisco in 1850 and was listed as a dealer in "Guns, Rifles, Pistols, Powder and Shot" in the 1850s and 1860s. He claimed to be the sole retailer for Deringer pistols in California which was obviously a false claim meant to gain interest given other known Deringer retailers such as Klepzig & Company who also operated in San Francisco. Since he was purchasing Slotter & Co. rifles, he likely sold the Slotter & Co. copies of Henry Deringer's famous pistols instead of the more expensive Henry Deringer pistols. His shop also sold a number of guns produced by other major American firms such as Remington, Sharps, and Colt. Curry amassed a substantial fortune through his business success and real estate investments.

ConditionVery good. The barrel is a mostly crisp brown patina overall and displays some patches of minor pitting and scattered marks. The lock also has a brown patina. The remaining brass and German silver fittings have an attractive aged patina. The stock is good with multiple cracks including one above the lock, sharp checkering, the typical wear near the hammer, and scattered minor scrapes. The action is excellent. The markings remain distinct.
