Description:

This Allen & Thurber pepperbox was produced in Worchester, Massachusetts, between 1847 and 1865. The action and screwed on nipple shield display factory scroll engraving patterns. The hammer is marked "ALLEN'S PATENT/1845" on the left, and the barrel group is marked with "ALLEN & THURBER WORCHESTER" . The bottom of the trigger guard is marked "C 75". "145" is marked on the left side of the main spring, grip strap, inside of the trigger guard, and on the inside of each grip panel. The inside of the trigger guard also has a "1". The barrel group is finished blue, and the action is casehardened. It is fitted with bag shaped walnut grips. Included with the pepperbox is an antique leather holster.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel group retains 70% of the original blue finish with some areas thinned and a brown patina forming. The remaining surfaces have a mix of gray and brown patina. The grips are good with some small pressure marks and scratches. The engraving patterns and markings are mostly crisp, and the action is fine. The holster is good with crackling and wear most notably on the upper sections and the lower rows of stitching loose from the loop. It is rare to find a pepperbox complete with its original holster.
