Description:

This revolver's serial number dates to 1862. It is marked with the correct two line Hartford barrel address, standard Colt's patent marking on the left side of the frame, matching serial numbers, and the stage coach scene on the cylinder. In addition, it has "Capt. J.G. Butler, from his Friends in Syracuse" inscribed down the back strap and onto the butt (likely a latter addition). Captain John G. Butler was the leader of a zouave unit raised from Syracuse, New York, during the Civil War. The unit, sometimes simply called the Syracuse Zouaves, was Company D of the 3rd Regiment of New York Volunteers. The 3rd was one of many units that wore uniforms stylized after the French zouave units which gained status for their bravery and stylish attire earlier in the century. The unit participated in the famous Battle of the Crater among others. The revolver has the standard post and notch sights, blued barrel and cylinder, casehardened loading lever, frame, and hammer; a silver plated grip frame, and two piece grips. There are some small single letter inspection marks. It comes in a French fitted wood case with Eley Bros. tin for caps, a combination tool, dual cavity bullet mold, two lead bullets, and eagle powder flask.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally restored. It is fitted with a replacement wedge. 98% plus of the royal blue finish, silver plating, and case colors remain. There are some minor marks, small patches of light spotting, and a slightly aged patina on the silver. The period replacement grips are fine with some age cracks and a bluish-green discoloration. The action is excellent, and the markings are crisp. However, the loading lever is stiff. The custom made relined case is good with some stains, fading, tears, and pressure marks on the interior and some minor storage wear and cracks on the exterior. The accessories are very good as refinished.
