Unique U.S. Colt Third Model Dragoon Cartridge Conversion Revolver

This revolver was originally manufactured in 1852 for cap and ball ammunition and inspected by Joseph Hannis or John Hawkens based on the small "JH" and "H" inspection marks. It was subsequently non-factory converted for metallic cartridges. An ejector housing with cartridge case head cap, recoil shield, loading gate (appears pewter), and firing pin were added as part of the conversion and the original loading lever was removed and the hinge slot filled. The conversion is similar to those done on the Pocket Navy revolvers in the mid-1870s but has a more primitive style indicating it was likely converted by a frontier gunsmith. It has matching visible serial numbers, the New York City barrel address, "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." on the frame, and the Indian and Texas Ranger cylinder scene. It has a German silver blade front sight, primitive rear sight soldered on the recoil shield, and a one-piece walnut grip.

ConditionGood as period converted for metallic cartridges. The revolver primarily has a blend of gray and brown patina and an aged patina on the grip frame. There are some dark case colors on the hammer and some oxidation. The grip is fine with moderate lower edge wear and slight chips. The action is fine, and the markings are clear aside from the faint cylinder scene.
