Pennsylvania State Police First Generation Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Special Order 3 1/2 Pound Trigger Pull and Factory Letter

The factory letter indicates that this pistol was shipped in its current configuration to the "State of Pennsylvania c/o Troop C State Police" in Reading, Pennsylvania, on January 8, 1929, as a sole gun of this type in order #158691/1. The letter notes the trigger pull under the special features category. It has the standard markings and features of a Single Action Army from that period including matching serial and assembly numbers. Given that this revolver was shipped well after double action revolvers became the norm and that it was ordered with a lighter trigger pull, this revolver was likely ordered as a gift and was possibly owned by a member of the force in supervisory role that would likely never need to fire a shot outside of the range. The Pennsylvania State Police were formed in 1905 in reaction to the increasingly violent conflicts between labor and businesses in the state. They replaced the Coal and Iron Police which were raised supposedly protect lives and property from mobs but were instead often used by the businessmen that controlled them as thugs to enforce their will and consolidate control. The State Police were designed to take away that power but were initially kept as a small force to avoid worrying laborers. It was the first uniformed state police unit in the country. Troop C was based in Reading. By the 1920s, the State Police were involved in highway policing and drivers license examinations.

ConditionExcellent. The revolver retains 95% of the original blue finish and nearly 97% of the vivid case colors. There are rotation marks on the cylinder, some miner thinning and marks from handling marks. The grips are near new with minor marks at the edges. The action and markings are excellent.
