Description:

Charles Lancaster's multi-barreled pistols were introduced in the mid 1800s and although these pistols were never a standard issue weapon with the British colonial forces, many officers assigned to Africa and India chose Lancasters over the standard issue revolvers due to their superior rate of fire and large caliber. An estimated 712 of all models of this four barreled pistol were manufactured. The top of the barrel cluster is marked "CHARLES LANCASTER PATENT 151 NEW BOND ST LONDON". Both sides of the barrel cluster are stamped with six proofs near the breech with "476 CF" stamped on the left flute. Additional British proofs are stamped on the sides of the frame. The workshop number "55" is stamped on the underside of the frame and barrel cluster near the hinge. The serial number is engraved on the trigger guard. The breech face is stamped "PATENT CHARLES LANCASTER" in a circle. Fitted with checkered bird head grips and a lanyard ring on the butt. The Charles Lancaster Gunmakers Ltd. Authentication certificate confirms the caliber and states that it was built in May 1885 for Lord Verulam; in 1885, Lord Verulam would be James Walter Grimston, 2nd Earl Verulam, Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, former Minister of Parliament, and sitting member of the House of Lords. As Lord Lieutenant, Lord Verulam was the Queen's personal representative and commander of all militia in Hertfordshire. The brown leather holster has the initials "F.W.L.P." embossed on the flap.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period refurbished. The pistol retains 99% plus of the high polish blue finish showing a few minor handling marks. The grips are near mint with overall crisp checkering. Mechanically fine. The holster is very good with overall flex wear. The stitching tight.
