Damascened Caucasian Style Miquelet Pistol with Extensively Wire Inlaid Stock

This attractive pistol was likely manufactured in the early 19th century and has gold damascene designs on the trigger plate, lock, and upper tang. The barrel also has inlaid and relief designs. The stock has wire inlay in scroll and floral patterns covering most of the surfaces and some inlaid Arabic style calligraphy along the sides of the upper tang. The barrel is secured by three nickel silver bands and the forend has a bone cap. The wood displays an attractive stripe pattern. The butt is in the rounded ball shape common to the Caucasian region, and the pistol also has the small round trigger and Russian miquelet lock commonly found on pistols used in the region. Given the Arabic markings, the pistol was likely manufactured prior to the expulsion of the Circassians by Imperial Russian forces at the end of the Caucasian War and may have been used by Circassian fighters during that conflict.

ConditionFair to fine. The lock retains traces of the gold damascene patterns, traces remain on the upper tang, and the lower tang retains nearly all of the gold finish. The balance has a dark brown patina with pitting. Traces of inlaid designs remain on the barrel. The stock is very good and retains much of the wire inlay with some loose sections and small absent pieces. There are a few small chips and minor marks on the wood surfaces. It mechanically needs work.
