Description:

M1 Carbine manufactured by Underwood Elliot-Fisher c. 1943. The carbine is fitted with a post-WWII T-4 barrel band with bayonet lug marked "MMQ" on the left side. The top of the barrel band is lightly engraved "UNDERWOOD EXPERIMENTAL/U.S. GOVERNMENT PROPERTY/NO. 6 CAL 30 M1 3 1943". The heel of the receiver has been milled smooth and re-stamped with the serial number "6". The barrel is roll-stamped "UNDERWOOD/3-43" above the Ordnance Shell & Flame insignia. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped "U.S. CARBINE/CAL. 30 M1". The carbine has the early Type 1 flip sight with blued spring marked "PN" on the right side and "S" on the left side, WWII flat top bolt, Type II unmarked push safety, Type III magazine release with plain face, nicely figured high wood stock with oval sling cut and nicely figured, two-rivet, walnut hand guard. "No. 6" is boldly stamped on the left side of the stock. There are no other markings on the stock and hand guard. All of the metal components except for the rear sight spring and T-4 barrel band have an even gray-green parkerized finish. The bolt has been refinished. The carbine is complete with: (1) three 15-round, flat base magazines marked "U" on the spines, (2) post-war olive drab "D-Tip" sling, (3) Type I magazine pouch marked "AVERY 1943" on the back and "U.S." on the front, (4) M1 carbine case marked "M.-D. MFG. CO/1944" on the inside, (5) Utica M4 bayonet, 11 5/8 inches overall, 6 5/8 inch blade, leather washer grip and a B.M. Co. M8A1 sheath, (6) modern all-weather rifle case sized for the carbine and bayonet, and (7) a notarized letter from a previous owner, which states that the carbine was procured from a former Underwood employee. The story related by that employee is that #6 was part of a lot of M1s that were used as a test bed for the T-4 barrel band, which was retained by Underwood in the company vault. The employee was one of the workers on the project, and was given carbine #6 as a retirement gift.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The carbine shows almost no finish wear. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition and show almost no handling or storage wear. The extra magazines, sling, magazine pouch and case are all in excellent condition. Mechanically excellent. This is an interesting example of a specially serial numbered and marked Underwood Elliot-Fisher M1 Carbine.
