Description:

The top of the barrel of this classic long rifle has "S + B" along with some light wavy engraving, and the lock plate is marked "T/KETLAND/& Co". The Ketlands were active in Birmingham from the early 18th century well into the 19th century. The use of imported locks as well as those made by early American locksmiths on rifles built by provincial gunsmiths in the period is well know. However, in this instance the lock, or parts of it, may be a replacement given the pan is not centered on the touch hole. This example has light designs on the muzzle, the standard blade and notch sights, a full length curly maple stock with brass furniture and twenty-eight silver inlays. The left side of the butt has a cheekpiece followed by rococo scroll carving. There are also some carved line accents along the length of the stock. The patch box has multiple pierced through sections and light engraving. The silver inlays also have some light designs.

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel has a mottled mixture of gray and brown patina, oil stains, and patches of mild oxidation. The lock has a dark almost blued appearance along with some minor oxidation and a couple bright strike marks on the otherwise remarkably smooth battery face. The brass and silver have a pleasant aged patina. The interior of the patch box is filled with a wax like residue and bright verdigris. The stock is fine as re-oiled and repaired on forend forard of first wedge, some other visible cracks and mild wear and chips around the lock inlet. There is attractive flame figure especially on the butt. On part of the toe plate is loose and missing a nail. The lock functions fine, and the markings are legible.
