Description:

This pistol is engraved with "J. Chase" on the upper left barrel flat and has "CAST STEEL" on top. There are floral engraving designs on the upper tang, ramrod entry pipe, and trigger guard; smooth silver wedge escutcheons and a shield on the back of the grip, and a dog and bird scene engraved on the brass buttplate. It has blade and notch sights, a full length bird's head style stock, and an underhammer with knurled spur. The pistol is discussed on pages 63, 106, and 107 (pictured on the latter two) of Underhammer Guns by Herschel Logan (copy included). Logan calls this pistol an "ultra piece" and "Truly it is a splendid example of a most unusual Underhammer of other years." Paul N. Crockett, a former owner of the pistol, notes on that "This gun sure handles nice. There is no heavy squeeze or side pull like when firing over hammer guns."

Rating Definition:

Good. The hammer has muted original case colors. The other visible surfaces have gray and aged patina, but strong original brown finish remains on the protected underside. The stock is fair with some silvers and chips absent, a crack in the ramrod channel, and some handling and storage marks. The action functions excellently, and the markings and patterns are mostly crisp. As underhammer expert Herschel Logan put it: "Truly this is a most unique and beautifully designed Underhammer pistol."
