Barrel: 21 3/4 inch fluted
Finish: blue

Stock: hardwood

Description:

Developed in the 1930's, the Type 96 was Japan's standard issue light machine gun at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and would continue to be used alongside the 7.7mm Type 99 Machine Gun through the end of the war. Dated 14.7 (July 1939), with the Kokura Arsenal stamp and serial number on the right side of the receiver. With a blade front sight, adjustable peep rear sight, and a fixed power 2.5x13 scope, marked "No.20685" and equipped with a right-offset "periscope" lens to see around the magazine. The barrel is heavily ribbed, with a mounted carry handle and a folding bipod assembly and bayonet lug on the gas cylinder. Fitted with a ribbed hardwood pistol grip and a buttstock with a smooth buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with half of the faded blue finish, showing areas of brown patina, mild spotting and handling marks. The wood is good with some chipping and scuffs. The barrel has been plugged and welded to the receiver, though the mechanism passes a basic function test. Some light spots are preset on the otherwise clear optics, and the magazine is an inert replacement that can not be charged. NOTE: This item is registered with the BATFE as a machine gun, and it is the sole responsibility of the bidder to understand and abide all relevant rules and regulations. Though currently incapable of firing, it is by legal definition, still a machine gun. No assurances or guarantees are given regarding the feasibility, expense or safety of restoring this arm to firing condition.
