Description:

This is a rare example of an early Mauser factory preproduction or factory test Luger pistol. These are quite rare with only a handful ever produced (or even known today) by the Mauser factory. They are unnumbered and unproofed, and it is theorized that they were assembled as preproduction/test pistols to check the part tolerances and assembly procedures for all future Luger pistols. These were probably manufactured circa 1933/34 when Mauser took over all produced at the old DWM factory. These were easily identified by the large "WaA66" markings on the sides of the grips and the single early "crown/U" proofmark on top of the front toggle, front of the frame, and side of the barrel extension. It has a single early, tin plated Luger magazine with no markings that is fitted with a blank aluminum base. It has a blued finish with straw colored smaller parts. This unique pistol is the exact pistol pictured on page 299 of the book "Lugers at Random" by Charles Kenyon in 1969 and on page 221-1 in "Third Reich Lugers" by Jan Still.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as factory refurbished. With 90% of the rust blue finish, edge and high spot wear, and finish loss on the muzzle, lower front edges of the frame and front frame rails. The various smaller parts retain 70% of their straw colors overall. The grips are in very fine condition with the large deep carved "WaA66" markings on both sides. A unique example of a very scarce and early preproduction test Luger.
