Description:

This is a rare example of what started out as a late DWM Model 1908 Commercial Luger and appears to have been sold to the Mechlenburg-Schwerinische-Gendarmerie rural constabulary circa 1909/10. The G.M.S.G. markings stand for the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin which was a territory in Northern Germany held by the House of Mecklenburg residing at Schwerin. It was a sovereign member state of the German Confederation and became a federated state of the North German Confederation and finally of the German Empire in 1871. This Luger started out as a commercial pistol and was originally manufactured and proofed in that style. The top of the chamber area was marked (probably by the DWM factory) with "G.M.S.G." and a date or property number; it looks like it was originally number "14" below that. It was subsequently converted during the Weimar era into a Police Luger and restamped with a new property number (967) on top of the chamber area. It was also stamped with "M.S.G./967" on the front grip strap; the first letter "G" was not stamped which is in keeping with Army and Police property markings of the Weimar era. It has the standard late commercial numbering sequence with the full serial number (60729) stamped on the front of the frame, underside of the barrel and left side of the barrel extension, and the last two or three digits stamped on the various smaller parts. The barrel, barrel extension, breechblock and front toggle are correctly stamped with the "Crown/N" commercial proofmark. Since it was a Model 1908 Luger, it correctly does not have the stock lug and is fitted with a magazine hold open latch. It is fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips and is compete with two matching tin plated magazine with original wooden bases. Both of the bases were originally stamped with the full serial number (60729) and the original property number "14" below. When it was converted into a Police Luger, the top/front end of the base was restamped with the new property number "967", and the lower edge of the base was correctly numbered in a Police manner with "1 and 2" over the old number "14".

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% of the blue finish remaining overall, edge and high spot wear, and finish loss on the side plate, muzzle area and center section of the front grip strap. The smaller parts all retain 50% of their straw colors. The walnut grips are in fine condition with nice checkering on both sides, wear across the tops of the checkering, and some slightly heavier wear areas on the left side. As noted, it has all matching numbers including on both magazines. This is certainly a rare Mechlenburg-Schwerinische Police Luger.
