Colt only manufactured about 2,488 of these single shot pistols from 1926 to 1941. They were built using Officer Model frames fitted with target sights and grips and a unique single shot block in place of the cylinder. The included factory letters for this pistol confirms the caliber, barrel length, checkered walnut grips (only in the newer letter), and blue finish. The revolver shipped to R. W. Smith in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, on August 10, 1934, and has a masterfully executed scroll and punch dot engraving on the frame, block, muzzle, breech, and trigger guard. The engraving covers approximately 25% of the metal surfaces. The right side of the grip frame is signed "A. A. WHITE ENG." indicating that the revolver was engraved by renowned former Colt Master Engraver Alvin A. White after it left the factory. The back strap is checkered. The standard Colt markings remain unobstructed by the engraving patterns including the matching serial number on the left side of the grip frame, crane, and block. The checkered walnut grips are numbered "1161" and have a thumb rest on the right. Alvin A. White is one of the United States' most iconic firearms engravers and has been nicknamed "The Dean of American Arms Engravers". He began engraving firearms in the 1920s, but his passion for firearms engraving really took off after WWII. Many of the weapons engraved by White are now important parts of museum collections throughout the United States. He is known to have engraved presentation pieces for important world leaders including Kennedy, Reagan, Brezhnev, and King Hussein. Though White passed on at the age of 91 in 2006, the legacy of his craftsmanship lives on through the outstanding works he produced during his long career and those still produced by the engravers who learned from him.
