Description:

This is a rare example of an early production 2 digit serial number DWM Model 1900 commercial contract Luger with unrelieved frame. This is one of the earliest DWM Model 1900 Luger pistols that we have ever offered. With this low of a serial number, it was certainly made in the first or second month of production. As noted it has the very rare and highly desirable "unrelieved" first type frame that is accompanied by an equally rare, early "flat button" magazine. These Lugers represent the very first commercial contract pistols sold by the DWM factory to any country. This pistol has the early dished toggles with toggle lock; a flat/recessed breech bolt; no stock lug; early style, narrow grip safety; early style, smaller checkered safety lever with coarse checkering; early narrow trigger; flat recoil springs and the fast taper, 4 3/4 inch barrel. This Luger has the blank chamber area and the "DWM" marked front toggle. The entire pistol is void of any proof or acceptance marks and is numbered "68" on the frame, underside of the barrel, recoil lug, the grip safety, trigger, breechblock, and complete toggle train. The side plate is numbered "8" on the back side, and the takedown lever is unnumbered or proofed. This example still retains the original, unmodified, early "V" notch rear sight. It is fitted with a set of later production, original Luger replacement walnut grips. As noted, this beautiful Luger pistol is complete with a very early, "flat button" magazine that has the nickel plated magazine body and wooden base stamped: "GERMANY". It is complete with an equally rare, very early unmarked model 1900 style leather Luger holster.

Rating Definition:

Very good as period refinished with 75% of the dull blued finish overall, clear markings, sharp edges and flats, and the front and rear grip straps both shows signs of old light pitting under the blue finish. The smaller parts retain traces of their case colors overall. The later production, replacement grips are in very fine condition with nice, distinct checkering with some minor handling marks. The holster is in good condition with nice dark color overall with some scuffing of the leather surface with all tight stitching except the upper inch on the side, which is just starting to come loose. Notwithstanding the fact that this rare Luger been refinished, it is an extremely important, early first production DWM Model 1900 Luger pistol. It certainly would be the center piece of any Luger collection!
