The action has the standard Sharps and Lawrence patent markings and is marked with the serial number "C,23168" on the upper tang. The smooth butt stock is the style without a patch box. The Sharps New Model carbines were among the most popular breech loading weapons used by the Union cavalry during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Fair as assembled/modified (appears period). There are some mild patches of pitting primarily at the muzzle and on the saddle ring bar. The surfaces display a matching mix of brown and gray patinas. The buttplate has textured oxidation. There are some dings and scratches throughout. The refinished wood is fair as modified. There are some hairline cracks including one 3 inches long extending from the tail of the lock plate towards the lower tang. Some of the small components of the primer are absent. The lock functions excellently and most of the markings are clear.
