Cased British Proofed Colt Model 1862 Police Percussion Revolver with Accessories

Manufactured in 1863. The top of the barrel has the one-line New York address, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame, patent date marking on one of the cylinder flutes and "36 CAL" on the left trigger guard shoulder. The matching serial number along with the letter "E" is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap with the barrel wedge is unmarked and the cylinder pin has the correct partial serial number (0353). The letter "E" in the serial number usually indicates that the revolver was marked to be engraved. The only engraving on the revolver is a family crest on top of the back strap (see image). The crest consists of a rearing lion and the motto "Faire Mon Devoir" or "Do My Duty." British proofs are marked on the left side of the barrel lug and on each cylinder flute. Fitted with a smooth varnished one-piece walnut grip. The partitioned mahogany English case (made for another type of revolver) is lined with burgundy velvet and holds the following accessories: Eley cap tin with caps, lead balls, two cavity bullet mold, L-shaped screwdriver, oiler, C&JW Hawksley plain powder flask, and six 36 cal Eley’s combustible cartridges.

ConditionVery good. The revolver has a smooth dark gray patina with traces of original blue finish and original darkened case colors remaining in the protected areas. The grip straps retain original silver in the protected areas of the trigger guard, otherwise the exposed brass has a very attractive patina. The grip is very good with half of the varnish remaining and some extensive minor handling marks overall. The relined case is fair with some minor handling/storage marks, a replacement brass lid shield inset, missing lock escutcheon and some high spot wear on the lining. Mechanically fine.
