Description:

Cased pair of engraved Colt London Model 1851 Navy revolvers manufactured in 1855. Both revolvers have the Colt punch-mark stamped below the serial number on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap that indicates these components were to be factory engraved or receive special finish. The revolvers are decorated with typical English engraving which features detailed scrollwork on a hatched background. The scrollwork covers the muzzles, sides of the lugs and adjacent barrel flats, bottom and sides of the loading levers, frames, trigger guards and lower grip straps and back straps. The tops of the barrels are roll-stamped: "- ADDRESS COL. COLT. LONDON-" with arrows at either end of the legend enclosed by an engraved double line border with flourishes at the muzzle end. The London "Crown/V" and "Crown/CP" inspection and proof marks on the left side of the barrel lugs have engraved oval borders. The left side of both revolver frames is engraved with "Colts Patent" in Old English letters on a ribbon background. The serial numbers on the barrel lugs, frames, trigger guards and back straps have engraved rectangular borders. The hammers have fine bordered knurling on the spurs with scale engraving on the tops and engraved scrollwork on the sides. The sides of the loading lever latches have fine, bordered knurling. The ends of the wedge of Revolver A are engraved. The wedge on Revolver B is plain. Both revolver cylinders are roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLT'S PATENT". London proof and inspection marks are stamped on each cylinder chamber. Revolver A is stamped with the full serial number "28318" on the loading lever, barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. Revolver B is stamped "28324" on the lever, barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers on both revolvers match. In addition to the London markings, both revolvers have the distinctive deeper cylinder nipple recesses, steel back straps with large hammer notch, oval steel trigger guards and round screw heads that are typical of Colt London Model 1851 Navy revolvers. The barrels, frames, cylinders, and hammers were originally blued and color case-hardened but now have a good looking silver coin finish. Traces of the case hardened finish are visible on protected areas of the levers. The steel trigger guards and back straps are silver-plated and retain most of the original finish. Both revolvers have one-piece grips of deluxe, highly figured, walnut with a high polish varnish finish. The revolvers are in a English style oak case with brass reinforced corners and a carrying ring on the lid. The case has ten compartments and is lined with green baize. Two of the compartments have lids with brass handles. The case contains: (1) a Dixon bag shaped powder flask marked "COLTS NAVY FLASK" with adjustable charger and lanyard loop, gold plated top, fire blue spring and brown lacquer body, (2) blued, iron, double cavity bullet mold marked: "COLT'S/PATENT" on the sprue cutter and "36P" on the right block, (3) two military blue, L-shaped screw-driver nipple wrenches, (4) sealed 500 count tin of Eley percussion caps with blue outer wrapper, tan label and gold metal seal on the top, (5) key and (6) several .36 caliber round balls. The case has compartments for an oil bottle and cleaning rod but is missing those accessories.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with traces of the silver-plated and color case-hardened finish in protected areas. The cylinder retains most of the Texas Navy scene and has light-moderate flash pitting on the rear face and percussion nipples. All of the cylinder safety pins remain intact. The sides of the hammer show moderate flash pitting. The un-engraved surfaces of the barrel and lever are smooth with no pitting and only light handling marks. The engraving on the barrel muzzle and lug shows some handling wear but the engraving on the frame, lever, back strap and trigger guard is crisp and deep. The barrel legend, patent markings and serial numbers are sharp. The cylinder hands have been removed from the revolver and are in the case; the cylinder will rotate when the hammer is cocked. The case is in good overall condition. The exterior shows moderate handling and storage wear with no damage or repairs. The case interior is in good condition. The lining on the lid may be a period replacement. The lining on the case bottom and compartment dividers has the usual oil stains and compression marks with small tears from contact with the revolver hammers and front sight beads. The powder flask is in very good condition and retains about 80% of the brown lacquer, gold-plated and fire blue finish. The bullet mold has about 75% of the military blue finish intact with numerous small dents on the sides of the mold blocks. The screw-drivers have some age discoloration but retain about 80% of the military blue finish. The cap tin is in very good condition with nearly all of the original blue paper wrapping intact. This is a fine double cased set of factory engraved Colt London Model 1851 Navy revolvers.
