Description:

The overall design of this rifle is indicative of the 17th century. The lock plate is marked "ENGST" below the pan cover, and the barrel is marked "JOS. REISINGER IN WELS" on top. Wels is in Upper Austria near Linz, and the area has been settled since prehistoric times. Some sources list Jos. Resigner as active there as late as 1770-1810, but the rifle appears much older, and the lock marking indicates it was manufactured by one of the Engst makers active between late 16th century and early 18th century in Bavaria. There is engraving on the upper tang and breech end of the barrel. The brass trigger guard extends very low and has finger grooves. The stock has scrimshawed bone inlays with floral patterns and a wooden patch box. The cheekpiece has an inlay with an "ML" or "LM" monogram. It is equipped with a dovetailed blade front sight, notch mid sight, and an adjustable peep rear sight. There is a switch/button on the left side of the stock ahead of the flat that is part of the trigger mechanism. A false front trigger is fitted into the wood ahead of the set trigger.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel and lock have a mix of gray and brown patina. The brass has a well aged patina. The front and rear sights are later replacements. The stock is fair with several cracks as well as some crude nail repairs around the rear barrel tang with numerous "V" shaped reglued cracks. Some bone inlay has been replaced, most noticeably on belly of buttstock forward of butt. The bone pieces have aged nicely and still have mostly distinct scrimshaw patterns. The lock appears functional but has not been tested. The front of the two set triggers is broken, and the rear trigger releases a few seconds after it is set.
